One note on motor oil in a trans, it is not rated to be used at the higher RPM you'd see with the Mitsu engine in your 17'er so I have a feeling that they would not have used it in your trans. If it had motor oil in it, I would remove the cooler and lines as well to make sure I flushed all of it out - mixing ATF and engine oil is not a good idea. That way you have a fresh fill of what you know is in there. The Marine Mechanic I'm going to connect you with. Mechanic's Assistant: Sometimes things that you think will be really complicated end up being easy to fix.

If it were me, and others may disagree here, I would suck out what you can (may end up being 1-1/2 to 2 quarts) refill it with fresh Dexron, run it for ~10 minutes to warm it up, then suck it out again and then bring it up to the proper level. Velvet Drive Transmission 10-17-006 AS2-71C 1.52:1 Borg Warner Velvet Drive 71C Transmission AS2-71C 1.52 Same as 10-17-006 1.52. Have a 10-17-004 velvet drive transmission running good and went to change the oil and it was a pinky milk looking oil replaced the oil cooler and replaced the oil and still the same thing. Dexron is what they recommend for the VDs now but an older unit could have 30 weight oil in it (that wouldn't be red). Unless the cooler is above the level of the trans sump, you usually won't get to what's in it during a single change. For use on Velvet Drive/Borg Warner 10-17 model inline transmissions. Back to neutral and the knocking was still there. Velvet Drive 71C Transmission Overhaul Kit Kit includes gasket and seal kit, as well as all forward clutch plates, and steel plates (reverse clutch plate is NOT included). I placed shifter in neutral and tried to put it back in fwd and could hear knocking.

Maybe 2 quarts in the trans and possibly another pint in the cooling hoses and cooler. I was running across the lake yesterday with now problems and out of nowhere the boat just stopped and engine revved up. I also don’t own a tow vehicle (yes, I know) so testing on the land is a good option. These transmissions do not hold all that much fluid.

My main question is, if I disconnect the prop shaft from the transmission can I test it outside the water and will I have troubles aligning the shaft again if no mounts were touched? I’m quite time constrained so the next time I can access the boat (I live 3 hours away plus a 2 hour ferry) I will be bringing a replacement damper. I will drain remaining fuel, replace filters and start again. We pulled the carb Edelbrok 1409, and are getting it rebuilt to ensure the boat will run in tip top shape as I understand a low crappy idle can cause some noise with the damper.

(Ok’d By inspection, bad gas, pretty good offshore wind right up the exhaust, on the trailer). Called it quits for the day.Īfter googling and talking with my uncle (outboard boat mechanic) he said to just run it after describing the events. We put it in gear on the trailer and we’re not happy with the results. On the trailer we started it up and it was not that happy idling. Velvet Drive transmissions Only turn the same direction as the motor while in forward gear If you try to get forward motion with an opposite. Or is there a way to change it to spin the prop in a diff direction.

I also changed he transmission oil and engine oil. The drive I got is model number 10 17 004 with a 1.1 ratio, serial number 13555 Does it work equaly well in forward or reverse. 'In-Line' indicates that the input and output shafts of the transmission are on the same plane. The most popular model is the In-Line unit. There are 3 basic models of transmissions each with offerings in the 71 and 72 ratings. My father and I tossed the boat in the water and hoped for the best. The '71' and '72' designations of Borg-Warner marine transmissions indicate input horsepower ranges. Raw water pump, plugs, wires cap and rotor (electric ignition stock). This year I did the items requested by the mechanic. I had it mechanically checked out by a mechanic although they never took it off the trailer during the test.
